HBCU Battle of the Brains, NFL, and 100 Black Men of Austin partnered to host an HBCU College Fair on Friday, March 10, 2023 during the 6th annual HBCU Battle of the Brains. Advisors from institutions attending HBCU Battle of the Brains provided insight, information, and plenty of swag from their respective schools to 200+ middle and high school students from across the Central Texas area while our HBCU students were competing in our 24 hour competition! #BattleTested #HBCUBotBrains #SXSW @leaguecreativegroup

100 Black Men of Austin Reads “Whoosh!” to Students Across Austin during Black History Month

 

During Black History month, the 100 Black Men of Austin members read Whoosh! by Chris Barton to 3rd grade classrooms in the Austin Independent School District (AISD). Students were in awe as they learned about Lonnie Johnson’s journey as a kid rocket launcher, teen robot builder, adult NASA Engineer, and inventor of the super soaker. This is book #5 of the AISD Read Mentor program. The 100 Black Men of Austin, Black Pearl Books, and Austin Independent School District have partnered to ensure students are building home libraries to reinforce the importance of reading.

 

100 Black Men of Austin MLK Weekend of Service

The 100 Black Men of Austin kicked off 2023 with a weekend of service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The organization focuses on giving back to the community in a variety of ways.  This year, the organization had the opportunity to speak with the Texas Civic Ambassadors as they hosted their retreat at the University of Texas, served as panelists at St Francis School as they hosted a conference focusing on community, partnered with Amazon Web Services to donate 100 jogging suits, shirts, and socks to Mission Accomplished (for the homeless), and marched with one of our key partners, Austin FC at the MLK March in Austin, TX.

 

100 BMOA Partners with Austin Independent School District to Provide Monthly Read Alongs in 3rd Grade Classrooms

Austin Independent School District and the 100 BMOA partnered to provide monthly read alongs in Title I 3rd grade classrooms across AISD.  The 100 members will read a different book monthly (books purchased from Black Pearl Books) to the students and will distribute 800-900 books monthly for the children build their home libraries.  As part of the cultural competency initiative, the goal is to make reading fun.
